Talk Today is one of the most comprehensive mental health programs for amateur sports in Canada.
Talk Today promotes the mental health of young athletes and spreads awareness about the benefits of positive mental health throughout communities across the country.
Originally launched in partnership with the Ontario Hockey League in 2014, Talk Today provides an important opportunity to address the mental health needs of athletes across across Canada.
Talk Today partnerships involve three core components:
Support
- Each organization has a CMHA Mental Health Coach who builds the relationship with the group and can provide resources and/or a warm hand-off to the right mental health supports in the community
- Each organization establishes a Mental Health Champion, a trusted leader within the organization to whom athletes would feel comfortable expressing a mental health concern, and this person acts as a liaison to the CMHA Mental Health Coach
Education
- All participants aged 15+ receive training in Team Up, a sports-specific mental health and suicide alertness program
- Mental wellness presentations are provided to youth under 15
Awareness
- CMHAs and partner organizations collaborate to host at least one awareness event annually to spread positive messages about mental health in the community
- Using the hashtag #TalkToday, CMHAs and partner organizations come together to celebrate their partnership and raise mental health awareness through social media
